No threat to Beijing Summer Games
We, the sports lovers, are not confident enough about the safety of the athletes and spectators in Beijing Summer Games. The Tibetans had long been a threat to the 2008 Summer Games. Furthermore, the attack on the policemen at Xinjiang on August 4, has added tension to the safety of this international sporting event.
But, IOC seems not to be disturbed by these militant threats. In accordance with IOC, the Chinese police captured the 2 main accused in the Xinjiang operation within hours of the attack. Beijing Games spokesman Sun Weide has claimed that security is extremely tight in Beijing and athletes or spectators should feel safe.
I, a representative of sports lovers, am also confident that no threat can mar the spirit of the games. The Summer Games faced similar threat in Los Angeles 1984 when the Soviet Union boycotted the event. In spite of the boycott, 140 nations took part in the event and made it a big success.
As no threat could take away the spirit of Summer Games in 1984, I strongly believe that the spirit will be at its best for the Summer Games in Beijing as well. We should not succumb to the attackers’ threats; instead we should hold hand in hand and build up a barricade against the spoilsports.
