Fay….on the way!

It had been about a week that I had last communicated with my wife Karen. She was attending some sorority meeting in Florida and would call me up once in a while to reassure me that things were just fine out there. Disinterested completely with poker as of late, and remembering the last brawl I had picked up with Romero at the golf court, I decided to imprison myself in my room and catch up on forty winks! Life had been a little rough on me lately, and a short period of seclusion from society would’nt do me any harm, I thought. And so it went and in no time I was in deep slumber.

It could have been three o clock when the phone buzz instantly woke me up. I looked around and fumbled for the phone on the bed. It was Karen. She sounded tensed. A hurricane was heading her way. Those were the first words I understood. Instantly I was completely awake. Grasping on to my senses I asked again what she was trying to say. She went on saying that, hurricane Fay had been predicted to hit the shores of Florida on Tuesday as it continued to gain momentum. Tornadoes were also expected over central and southern Florida. Already an emergency had been declared and measures adopted by the authorities  to protect life and property. Train services by Amtrak had been canceled as a preventive measure. She was in no way able to head back to Washington. But she assured me that she was safe and sound and would board on the first flight available and head home. With these words she hung up I the phone. She was a smart woman. I know she will find her way back in no time.

Maya civilization: a civilization of Central America

August 18, 2008 By: Disha Category: Mapping, North America No Comments →

Few days back I was reading Chariots of the Gods – a book which states that beings from another universe came to the earth to help the ancient civilizations on this planet to achieve new heights. Among the ancient civilizations mentioned in the book the Maya Civilization, a North America based civilization amazed me the most. Situated in the northern part of central America, the mesoamerican ancient civilization is well known for their architecture, art, culture, language and the knowledge of science. The area of Mayan civilization include some states of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize and Western Honduras.

It is said that the Mayans possessed a vast and accurate knowledge of astronomy and mathematics. That’s not all they were the first to invent an accurate calender that comes with minute specifications of astronomical events. They used accurate astronomical knowledge to make the calendars. The calenders are synchronized and interconnected in different ways forming extensive cycles. They even knew the Venus cycle accurately. How did the Mayans acquire such precise details about astronomy in such ancient time without any modern tools? These are sure the things to ponder.

The monumental structures made by the Mayans are also astonishing. How did they build those massive temples, palaces, observatories and pyramids without any metal tool? The book is sure to make you think. Not only is it an enjoyable read but also is the storehouse of a number of facts and figures that may catch your fancy. Reading the book I tried looking for all important sites of Mayan History from a map of central America and was very happy to find a few places. I also did a thorough study of Maya civilization and Mayan calender on the web.

The jubilation and the festivities around the city attract millions of visitors from all over the world each year. Apart from the natural beauty and warm climate, right from the times when Elvis Presley first sang Viva Las Vegas in 1969, to the casinos and other sources of entertainment in 2008, Las Vegas has been offering plenty of reasons to rejoice. In addition to this, the city is also visited for business, conference, and exhibitions.

Over the years, the Las Vegas Flights have been offering tremendous services to the casual and business tourists. People flying in these flights are warmly received with bright lights and a loud noise of the slot machines, which marks the entrance of Sin City.
Northwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and bmi are the main operators at the airport. The McCarran International Airport lies in proximity to the downtown area.

Among the daily flights that ply, some are cheap flights, whose low fares enable the passengers to allocate more of their budget on hotels and entertainment in the city. This particularly suits the tourists who travel under shoestring budget as they can avail these cheap flights to Las Vegas and stay at an inexpensive hotel away from the heart of the city.

Fall and winter are the best seasons for visiting Las Vegas. For this, the bookings for cheap flights to the city have to be made well in advance. The fares rise in times when the city hosts some major conferences.
