Studying World Map

August 22, 2008 By: Disha Category: Mapping, Travel No Comments →

As a child I used to harness my interest in geography and for that I and my friends used to play a game. We used to open a map of world and search for a given city, mine, or location in the map. Those who can find or point it accurately used to earn points. Now, looking back in time I can still remember the joy of exploration that I experienced through this game. There were many other benefits of playing the game too. Not only it helped me in my geography lessons, but I also learned names and location of different places. It was real fun to know about different countries, cities and tourist destinations. It was like a virtual tour around the world with the help of a map.

Even today when I look at the world map or the map of any continent or country for that matter I still feel the joy of exploration. You can also feel the same joy once you start studying a map. Start with a world map and see all the continents and countries. Then choose a country and study its map – It will help you know that country in a better way. This habit will also help you in planning a trip to any other country like Mexico, Spain, France, Australia, China and Egypt. It will also help you know your country in a better way. What’s more? You can also help your kids in their geography lessons.

Importance of Thematic Maps

August 22, 2008 By: Bombei Category: Mapping No Comments →

The subject dealing with making maps is called cartography. With the gradual development of science and technology importance of detailed maps have become prominent. Therefore thematic maps have emerged in the recent days. Thematic maps are subject based. They concentrate on some special aspect of a country or a continent. Generally there are two main types of thematic maps and they are known as physical maps and political maps. Apart from these there are road maps and other special maps too.
As far as it is known, the first thematic maps evolved in the middle of the 17th century. Quality of these maps were sketchy. The map makers did not have any help from the satellites as they do now a days. John Snow, a London resident and a physician by profession is believed to be the first person who first developed a thematic map based on cholera cases taking place in the city. This idea of his gradually gave birth to GIS or Geographic Information System.
There are various types of symbols with special attributes that are used for the understanding of the thematic maps. Use of regional colors is also one of the popular methods for these maps. They are technically known as Dasymetric Maps. Dot Maps are some of the first designed thematic maps. The first thematic map made by Mr. Snow belonged to this category.

‘Grander’ than Grand Canyon?

August 21, 2008 By: sweta Category: Mapping, North America No Comments →

The most fabulous trip I have ever made in my life is undoubtedly my visit to the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Located in the state of Arizona, this mammoth rock structure was carved out by the Colorado river more than six million years ago. Approximately it stretches across 446 kms and 4 to 18 miles wide with a depth of 1.6 km at some places. The Grand Canyon is one of the most visited tourist place in the US and every year tourists keep flocking to be amazed at this geological wonder.

We had planned our trip well in advance. As I had thought, we would be visiting the southern rim of the Canyon although I knew the area was always overcrowded and parking space was scanty. Numerous hiking trials are available but we decided to hike to the northern rim was was more remote and higher in elevation. Usually the northern rim is closed due to heavy snowfall in winter. The Havasu Canyon can be accessed by paved roads. Still furthur west, one can travel via the paved road to Peach Springs Canyon. There are various isolated spots offering mesmerizing sights which are undoubtedly unforgettable. A remote part of the canyon named Tuweep, can be reached traveling on a dirt track about 60 miles from Utah. Great aerial views await travelers.
