Biodiversity Of New Zealand

August 27, 2008 By: Disha Category: Environment, Mapping No Comments →

Being a island country situated in South Eastern Pacific ocean, New Zealand is blessed with a rich and unique variety of flora and fauna. For this reason this country has always been a popular destination for the nature lovers. The country with its bountiful natural resources welcomes the travelers in the realm of nature.

The most important reason behind the concentration of the extraordinary variety of flora and fauna was the isolated location of the country in Australian continent and the island biogeography. 80% of the vegetation in this Island country are endemic in nature. You can find two types of forests in this island country. You will find podocarps and giant Kauris in different areas of the country that have a little warmer climate. You can also find a number of southern beeches in the region with a cooler climate. The other parts of the country is covered with lush green grasslands.

The animal kingdom of New Zealand also has a wide variety. Most of the trees and animals are descendants of Gondowanan wildlife. For long it was thought that other than some species of bats there are no non-marine mammals until in the year 2006 the scientists have found skeletons of some rat like non-marine mammals in the interiors of the country. Animals in the country include takahe, kakapo, kiwi, megafauna, Haast’s Eagle, kaka and kea parrots. However, several of these species are now endangered, some are even living on the verge of extinction. Efforts are being made to control the extinction process.

Thus New Zealand is a beautiful country with a rich biodiversity. If you are a nature lover and want to spend a peaceful vacation in the lap of nature then New Zealand is sure to be your favorite tourist destination.

How the African Continent Got Its Name

August 27, 2008 By: Bombei Category: History, Mapping No Comments →

Africa – the very name of this continent flashes the idea of untamed forests in our minds. This is also the place where the human civilization is believed to have started its first journey. But very few among us are aware how this continent got its name. Studies have brought about different theories about this matter. Still some of them are well established with factual proofs.
North Africa, the place near Carthage is one of the main places where the African civilization saw its first days. Now, people living in this part of the continent were known as ‘Afri’. The word means ‘dust’ in English and it was pronounced as ‘afar’. It is also believed that a Berber word ‘Ifri’ might have given birth to the term ‘Afri’.
In Latin, the word ‘Aprica’ means a place which enjoys sunshine. The Greek word ‘Aphrike’, on the other hand, means a place which is not cold. So there are assumptions to form a theory that the name Africa may have come from a Latin or Greek origin. This theory was formed for the first time by a 15th century historian Leo Africanus. He also mentioned that the Greek term ‘Phrike’ donates a sense of horror. So it may be so that the origin of the name of this continent may be related to some ominous thought.

Geography Lessons And Internet

August 25, 2008 By: Disha Category: Mapping No Comments →

Yesterday I was teaching geography to my younger brother. He needed my help in map pointing. In this geographic lesson he has to identify and mark the locations of different cities, mines, rivers and lakes in an outline map. When I was a child I used to practice these lessons regularly. So When my brother asked me for help I was confident that I can help him out. I told him the trick to do these lessons. I also told him that only regular practice can help him do the lessons efficiently.

I showed him a mapping website named mapsofworld.com. From this site he can get a good help. He can learn about the exact shapes of the continents and countries from the outline maps. This site will also help him learn about the neighboring countries of China from the location map of China. The political map of USA will help him to learn about the political boundaries of the country while the information given in this site will help him gain knowledge about the country and its important cities, airports, ports and travel destinations.

When I was a child I did not have access to the Internet. So I could not get the assistance of such fine sites. But the kids in this age of information and Internet can easily access the web and get useful information about their studies.

Outline Map Of North America

August 25, 2008 By: Disha Category: Mapping No Comments →

Recently when I was cleaning my study and found a whole set of school books. I used to read them when I was a kid. I became very nostalgic and started flipping through the pages of an old geography book that I used to study as a student. In this book I found a number of outline maps.

I can still remember how these outline maps gave us the very first Idea about a country, continent or the world. When I was reading about North America I had my first impression of the continent looking at the outline map of North America. There was no political or geological boundaries on the map. However different gulfs, bays and oceans are clearly mentioned on it along with the lakes and rivers inside the land area of the continent. This outline map helped me to get a fair Idea about the shape and size of the continent. I could also learn abut the important water bodies in and around the continent.

I also used the blank outline map of North America for the purpose of map pointing. I have to locate different cities roads, rivers and other geographical areas in this blank outline map. Practicing the geographical lesson fetched me good marks in the subject. The habit has helped me in several ways later on. Even today I help my brother in his studies with my knowledge about map pointing.

Lot to know about Outline Maps

August 25, 2008 By: sukanyapaul Category: Mapping No Comments →

You must have seen different types of maps ranging from Physical maps, topography maps, river maps, road maps and others. However there is another type of map which I found on the net – the Outline Map. Apart from Outline maps of various countries, I found outline maps of the world. A number of websites are available providing outline maps of the countries as well as world.

These outline maps are extremely helpful for the students and are mainly used for the educational purpose. Students can use them for practice. Those who are interested in Geography and landforms may take hold of these outline maps and use them. Most of the online outline maps are available in the printable version.

I even found websites where you can even buy the outline maps of the world and outline maps of various countries. You will have to fill in a form and mention the details required and get the map sitting at home! Isn’t that great?

Importance of Political Maps

August 25, 2008 By: Bombei Category: Mapping No Comments →

Political maps are the maps which consist of political and administrative details of a country or a continent. These maps show the administrative territories of different countries and continents throughout the world. Students are the most benefited people by these maps. The main use of political maps is while reading geography. Students can use these maps as references to their studies. They can easily understand the location and the area acquired by a country or a continent. The political maps also features the subdivisions of these lands. They can know about the states that are in a country or the countries which are situated in a continent.
Political and physical – these two are the main types in which maps are available. If someone wants to know about the territorial borders he/she may consult a political map and on the other hand, physical maps are important for the students who want to know about a land’s geographical features.
Wars and treaties are the international incidents which bring changes in the several political maps. Therefore the map makers have to remain well updated with the current states of the various countries and their territories. Imperfection in the political maps may raise huge controversies and therefore the map makers have to be extra conscious about these facts.

Getting to know Neruda - and Myself

August 25, 2008 By: Ariktam Category: Culture, Education, Mapping, South America No Comments →

I was quite suddenly face to face with a challenge that I was not quite prepared for. My students opted for a course on Latin American poetry as a part of their final year Graduation course, and I was given the responsibility to teach them the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Neruda was not one of my strongest areas, and although I did have some grounding on Latin American magic realist literature, the poetry of the land was outright out of my ken. However, work is worship, and I had new gods to deal with.

The flip side of the situation was that my students were hardly more initiated in Latin American poetry than I was. The first challenge for me was to locate Neruda: he being a poet intensely grounded in his time and place. Neruda wrote poetry from his life, his ideology was formed as much from experiences immediate to him in his native Chile, as from books and manifestos. You will never know Neruda till you know his nation, its location and history and the time that he was writing in.  I was desperately in search for some South America maps, or more particularly a Chile map, which I could use for my classroom teachings.

My first day, thus started with a detailed presentation of the South America map: a primarily political map showing the various countries, borders, and demographics. Soon the mere name of a poet – a signifier in the abstract - got a life, a body, assumed a persona. They say there is no history without geography, and I say there is no culture without history. However, I never realized that this train of logic would come back to re-assert itself in such an unforeseen way - I never realized before how important a map can be in the understanding of literature.

What ensued was nothing less a journey of self-discovery for me and my students. His poems found a ground to take flight, and soon took wings. I realized that they were finding Neruda more interesting than most of the archaic English poets they were studying and getting thoroughly bored with. It was a kind of learning experience for me too. Before long, through an intense dialectic process between my students and myself, I was feeling more and more attached to this Chilean genius.
